Questions Regarding Traditional Stained Glass and Leadlights:- |
What is lead came?Answer:- Lead came is an "H" section lead extrusion into which individual glass segments are inserted after which the lead joints are soldered. listWhat is leadlight cement ?Answer:- Glass cement is comprised of a mixture of materials made to a consistency which allows for it to be brushed around the segments of glass and under the leads to seal the glass into the lead came. This prevents water penetration and stiffens the finished panel. list
What is reinforcement ?Answer:- To strengthen the finished panel a variety of methods can be used:- Steel inserts fitted either side of the lead came, lead came with steel inset in the lead, and saddle bars which are steel bars attached to the soldered joints of the lead light either directly or via copper ties. Saddle bars provide the strongest form of reinforcement and are especially beneficial for use with doors and opening lights or for large panels or panels subject to medium to high wind pressures. A combination of reinforcement methods can be used depending on the particular circumstances and severity of loading likely to be encountered either from wind pressure or human impact or both. Saddle bars are normally inset into the frame for added strength. list
